If you’re anything like me we spend our days going from one activity or obligatory study session right on to the next – sometimes I can even forget a meal in the hustle and bustle of things. Taking care of ourselves during medical school or PA school can be much harder than someone would think; pushing off doctors appts until your next break in classes, eating the quickest food option, or not paying any attention to your own health until you’re quite literally bedridden. I’ve been there, & it’s been more than a time or two!
Self-care isn’t a stranger to us, we counsel our patients on it daily, but here’s a few ways to incorporate it into your hustle without changing your routine too drastically:
1. Keep your feminine environment balanced: Your vagina is susceptible to a variety of factors that can throw it off balance including stress, hormones, pregnancy, condoms, sex and aging, to name a few. It’s super important to keep the “good” and “bad” bacteria in a happy balance. AZO Complete Feminine Balance® Probiotic helps maintain an optimal pH* and is clinically shown to work in 7 days.*
2. Eat well: It’s obvious that eating well as a student isn’t the easiest. Between meal prepping, choosing healthy snacks during study breaks, or maybe grabbing a late-night snack to help you forget about the test you may be behind studying may nottt be easy to commit to. But if there is ONE thing I regret about my didactic year in PA school it’s not living a healthier lifestyle, not just for my physical health but for my mental sanity in prepping for the hundreds of tests each week. Meal prep. Seriously, just commit to it & do it. In fact, do it with classmates so you can test each other while waiting for the food to bake or grill- utilize your time and give your body the nutrients it needs to think clearly & effectively.
3. Stay active & test your body to some physical activity: This doesn’t have to be going to the gym! There is no way sitting all day in class can be good for your lower extremities or vascular health. Standing while you study, using a stationary bike while you read over notes, going for a walk and listening to a medical podcast…all of these may actually even help in retaining information. Your brain works best when the blood is pumping & something as simple as standing while studying may make the biggest difference in your circulation & a couple points on your next exam.
