If you’re just starting out in creating a skincare regimen that works for you, start simple.
It’s vital that you first begin your regimen with a strong foundation that nourishes your skin barrier so that your skin has everything it needs to transform before stepping into a complex routine (regardless of skin type or concerns)
The Essentials:
Begin with these basics before stepping into any additional new products; a daily cleanser, moisturizer, an antioxidant (ie. Vit C), and sunscreen—apply these twice daily in the morning and night (Vit C in the AM unless you prefer AM + PM)
Apply this core routine for at least ~6 weeks before considering any additional steps. You know your skin best, but it’s key to wait long enough for your skin to respond to your current products, first. Having more products in your regimen isn’t necessarily the answer when it comes to having a good skincare regimen- so don’t buy into the hype!
**You’re much more likely to see results of improvement if you maintain a constant & simplified routine, versus jumping in head first with a 10 step regimen and consequently develop irritation.
There’s a method to the madness:
When it comes to the order of product application, there’s an easy rule of thumb to remember the steps of your skincare by that’s used universally: Thinnest > THICKEST
Remember this rule AFTER you’ve cleansed and have a beautiful, clean canvas to work with.
Applying products in this order is important for max absorption and to get the most out of your products! Basically, the thinner the product, the faster it penetrates the skin.
AM
First, things first:
Cleansing in the morning sets the scene for a fresh start.
Overnight dead skin build up and your night routine was hard at work—this first step removes those remains to prep your face for the remainder of your AM routine!
**While a mild gentle cleanser is all that’s needed, make sure not to go overboard on your active ingredients with morning cleansers if your routine already includes a heavy punch.
My current go-to cleanser is La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser
When it comes to skincare, costs can add up FAST. To rest assured knowing you’re getting the most out of your beauty dollars, invest in the ‘workhorse’ skincare products—ie. those with active ingredients and those you’ll use on a daily basis, & have ability to make the most improvement for your skin concerns.
I take advantage of my cleansing steps to save $$ and wait to splurge on my ‘active(s)’ / products where the formula and packaging can have a make or break effect on their efficacy. Plus, I’d rather use the $$ on the products that actually stay on my face (not on the stuff being washed off down the drain, haha).
When it comes to cleanser types, creamy cleansers are typically a good idea for dry skin types & foaming cleansers typically work best for oily skin types.
Cream based cleansers are often gentle on the skin with more hydrating properties than the other cleanser consistencies– making them ideal for dry or sensitive skin types – also my preferred way to double cleanse at night that won’t strip my skin of its natural oils.
Toner: A step I personally forego + isn’t an essential step, but can be added between cleansing and your antioxidant if desired!
The purpose of toners used to be to return the pH of the skin back to its optimal state since facial soaps were harsh and too basic for the skin- now days, cleansers are much more balanced and toners aren’t a complete necessity. However, there are plenty of great toners that offer hydrating benefits + other helpful purposes without causing abrasive effects—but! Most regimens will already include the necessary actives that adding a toner would consist of so beware of possible irritation and slowly incorporate if adding this in.
Ah, this might be a fave step (tied with SPF, ofc)
Serums are nutrient-dense, concentrated with effective ingredients typically to address and target concerns like sun damage, signs of aging, protects from environmental pollutants, and gives the skin a kickstart to repair itself after damage. Antioxidants you may recognize in skincare include ingredients like; Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Vitamin E, Retinol (Vitamin A), & Resveratrol.
By way of a quick intro to familiarize you with common antioxidants like Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, + niacinamide – as these 3 are particularly helpful for those with sensitivities & are often beneficial in all skin types to maintain hydrated skin.
*** Pro Tip: applying your skincare products to damp skin after cleansing or will allow for much more absorption of the actual skincare products (Beware with this as doing this can also increase chances of irritation & excludes retinols which you will always want to apply to *dry* skin)
Why the hype on Vit C and other antioxidants? The best past about combining antioxidants + SPF together in your regimen is that they work synergistically (insert *chefs kiss*)—this means you’ll basically get the best results when using the 2 together (a win, win). Using Vitamin C with SPF enhances UVA protection from the sun + free radical damage AND has anti-acne properties too!
I’m sure you can see why it’s a big fan fave by now!
My personal go-to antioxidant: Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic
But why does THIS CE Ferulic have the most clout? SkinCeuticals has, by far, the most published studies of all vitamin C serums on the market. They hold a patent on this formulation & since they’ve released this product, so many other brands have had their try at creating a dupe, but they don’t contain the exact formula and also lack the robust clinical studies that this company already did the leg work on– so it’s respected & incred.
Other Vit C’s I’ve used and like as well:
DE Vitamin C-Firma Day Serum: Another go-to if I’m out of my SC CE Ferulic
Other antioxidants that I haven’t yet tried, but backed by clinical trials include: Skin Better Alto Defense, Revision C+ Correcting Complex, Vichy Peptide C
Eye Cream (not an essential step, but an easy addition)
My honest opinion is that eye cream is certainly not essential- so, I’ve only tried and have used products backed by reputable companies based on their studies and results. Unfortunately, I can’t say I’ve tried an eye cream that I loved that was budget-friendly. But like I’ve said, you definitely don’t* need eye cream for an effective routine & when you think it is time…it’ll be worth the splurge IMO!
My personal go-to eye cream at the moment: SkinCeuticals A.G.E Complex
Okay so def a splurge…but, this nourishes & provides immediate + lasting anti-aging results reduces puffiness (thanks to peptides) and boosts elasticity.
AND + Colorscience 3-in-1 Total Eye: not much of an eye cream, but rather a color corrector to add to your SPF regimen.
AND + Revox 7– This bad boy is currently in my top drawer & immediately softens fine lines and it claimed to work synergistically with neuromodulators.
(yes, I know… I have a lot of current eye treatment go-to’s, but these bags under my eyes need some BIG TIME TLC, Okay?!)
Other good product options that I’ve tried & loved:
Drunk Elephant C-Tango Eye Cream
PCA Skin ExLinea Peptide Smoothing Serum
Moisturizer is vital for ALL skin types. Simple as that.
I usually let my skin absorb my for a couple of minutes (but this isn’t necessary) before applying my moisturizer… about the length of time it takes me to brush my teeth & then I moisturize once I’m done.
Moisturizer functions to hydrate the skin and repair the skin barrier…yes, even if you have skin on the oily side! A good moisturizer with have 3 types of ingredients, a humectant, ceramides, and emollients—all of these work together to lock in the hydration and prevent water loss.
Typically, I prefer to save on both moisturizers + sunscreens since there’s truly so many great options for both- that being said, below is a mix of options both cost effective & others being a splurge;
**Another general rule of thumb:
– For those on the dry side, like me: opt for a lotion or cream.
– For those on the oily side, consider a gel or gel-cream.
Currently personal go-to is –> SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore Cream
Other great options that I’ve tried & loved:
– Drunk Elephant Protini: Honestly a top personal favorite, it’s abundant in ceramides and quite comparable to Triple Lipid. But I can’t seem to part ways with the SC Triple Lipid (IMO, the GOAT for my dry / dehydrated skin)
– Neutrogena Gel-Cream Hydro Boost: Fantastic price point and my go-to option that I used throughout PA school religiously- this gel-cream is soothing & leaves you hydrated, but without the heaviness.
– SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore– Highly recommend for those extra dry or with dehydrated skin, like myself! Definitely another top favorite that I’ve noticed visible improvement in all aspects while using- less irritation, improved texture and appearance. Big fan over here, clearly Lol
Honestly, for those with combo or dry skin, you can’t go wrong with any of these above + available with a variety of price points, too!
Obv, the most important step. Yes, apply your sunscreen even when you’re planning on being indoors all day
Sunscreen should be the last product applied to your face before makeup in the morning (regardless rain or shine), likewise, moisturizers should be the last product applied at bedtime*
Below are the 5 SPFs in my rotation that I love and have bought repeatedly:
The first being Color Science’s Tinted Sunscreen in shades Original or Glow, I personally usually mix these on the back of my hand before applying– my go-to each morning for work that gives a nice light coverage glow.
Colorscience Glow
Color Science Original
EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 44: protects against both UVA and UVB rays, thereby reducing risk of photoaging and skin cancer. The UV Clear is a moisturizing, oil-free formula that feels light with application my skin; it’s a great option for those with sensitive skin prone to acne and rosacea.
Glossier SPF: Non-tinted. Has a great lightweight and gel-cream consistency that applies beautifully on the skin!
La Roche Posay Anthelios 50– Also lightweight and tinted, not as much of the “glow” effect as the others above.
Note: This post and the products I’ve included are not sponsored in any way, just simply my personal opinion and preference
